Our Little Project

You know, I think the hippo would have had a fighting chance if he'd been given a foil.

But a face mask on Abby might have mussed her camera hair.

We watched the gold medal fencing match and came away with this: Here is a sport that has come a long, long way from its roots. It's so technical now, so about scoring points, that it's lost all simulation of, you know, sword fighting.

Because in order to get those first touches, the fencer has to open herself up to a deadly counterattack. It doesn't matter here because she gets the first point, but how important would that be, really, if you died right after?

It's like if there was some sort of technicality in track events where a runner could step backwards one step instead of running forward around the track and say, "Hah! I reached the finish line first! I am technically the winner!"

I think if there's one thing this comment reveals, it's how very little I understand about fencing.
